Stress! Stress! Stress! I Need Help!

Having difficulty in work? Finding the kids out of control? Arguing with your spouse?

Stress! Stress! Stress! This word is almost inescapable from our daily vocabulary. If there is no due care given to the condition, it may lead to a depressive state. We need to take control of our lives and to look for solutions when we are faced with stressful situations or events.

First, we need to identify the cause of our stress. There are two possible quadrants which can lead to stressful situation. One is a normal person given a normal or repetitive stress (eg. working, financial, etc) and the other is a normal person given an abnormal or significant stress (eg. death of a spouse, bankruptcy, etc). An abnormal person would not understand stress and hence we will not discuss about that particular group of people here today.

With the first group, it is a lot easier to resolve the issues as those are issues which we need to face on a daily basis. We will now look at tips and possible solutions to managing your stresses better.

  1. Living a more balanced life, managing time and scheduling effectively, and as well as accepting support from others.
  2. You need to learn to take a break even if it is just for a few minutes. Go for a walk, listen to music, soak in a hot bath will definitely go a long way in resolving your stresses.
  3. Eating a healthy and balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables would help.
  4. Be realistic and don’t expect too much from yourself and from others.
  5. Think positively.
  6. Reduce or eliminate alcohol or tobacco intake. Scientifically it has been proven that the nicotine inhaled by active and passive smokers will actually vasoconstrict (constricting your blood vessel) and hence increase your blood pressure resulting in stress. Though most smokers will think alternatively, the continual ingestion of nicotine will only increase addiction and reliance on the product.
  7. Massages are good stress and tension reliever.

As for the second group, it may be necessary to see a psychologist if the above tips do not help. As failure to care for such pre-depressive state may lead to longer term psychological damages.

I hope the above helps. Remember tomorrow will always be a better day.
