MSD has come up with a new vaccine that can provide protection against cervical cancer. Majority of cervical cancer is a result of infection caused by the human papilloma virus, or HPV. The new vaccine is called “GARDASIL”.
GARDASIL protects against four HPV strains, as well as a number of conditions caused by the virus, including genital warts.

The WHO data showed that more than 50% of sexually active females will become infected with HPV during their lifetime. HPV is spread primarily through sexual intercourse; transmission via hand-to-genital and oral-to-genital contact has also been documented.
GARDASIL is for girls and women ages 9 to 26. The 3 injections is given over a period of 6 months. The injection schedule is as follow:
First Dose: At a date you and your doctor choose
Second Dose: 2 months after the first dose
Third Dose: 6 months after the first dose
Pain, swelling, itching, and redness at the injection site, fever, nausea, and dizziness are some common site effects with this injection. Pregnancy should be avoided during the vaccination regimen for GARDASIL.
GARDASIL may not fully protect everyone and does not prevent all types of cervical cancer, so it is important to continue regular cervical cancer screenings. Check with your doctor if you need this vaccination. Prevention is better than cure!
